Director Xia Magnus, in association with Oneonetwosix Films, is in production on his fourth film project, Assembly. Inspired by Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men, Peter Brook’s Lord of the Flies, and John Hughes’ Breakfast Club, Magnus is interested in the interplay of personality in an insular situation and the ease with which humans, when pitted against one another, turn to manipulation and malfeasance. This project aims to take an availing look at contemporary youth culture through the lense of the actors themselves. With Assembly, Magnus will attempt to create an alternative character building experience, inviting his cast to collaborate in constructing their characters through both personal and observational experience. Rooted in theater practices like Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed and improvisational dialogue and story construction in the spirit of Robert Altman, Assembly will be an unmediated character driven narrative, created in the incubation of the pre-production and rehearsal process itself.
